Oktatonik is based on the idea of performing original four-voice arrangements to the accompaniment of an instrumental quartet. The members are young jazz musicians, based in Belgrade: Anabela Aleksa, soprano; Iva Pažin, mezzo-soprano; Petra Leona Matiša, alt, arranger, composer; Viktor Tumbas, baritone; Ivan Radivojević, trumpet and flugelhorn; Stevan Milijanović, piano, composer; Boris Šainović, double bass; Miloš Grbatinić, drums
Petra Leona Matiša sought to find embodiment of her love of choir music in a smaller ensemble, with a clear vision to perform only original compositions/arrangements. The idea for this unorthodox formation is to perform a repertoire consisting of their own compositions as well as works of other young talented artists. The first divergence from the repertoire concept happened in Dom omladine (Youth Centre) in Belgrade, at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Nat King Cole’s birthday.

The project Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture was initiated with the aim to encourage cultural and creative potentials of this city with a rich cultural heritage. In 2016 in Brussels, Novi Sad was given the title of the European Capital of Culture 20201, after the presentation of a detailed plan for promoting the city as a tolerant, multinational, multicultural and multiconfessional community. The project has been treading steadily, with precisely defined objectives and a clear vision, in accomplishing its mission of creating and promoting programmes that are the bases of development and improvement of Novi Sad’s cultural capacities, both locally and internationally, as well as on an intercultural level. The strategy – which had to be precisely elaborated due to the ambitious idea and importance of the title – is based on new people, new processes, new venues and new programmes. Advancing towards the title year, the project Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture seeks to motivate and inspire the culture workers, as well as all the citizens to join forces and complement and improve the cultural identity of Novi Sad.
Novi Sad was granted the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2016 in Brussels, and ever since then it has worked on mobilising and networking the representatives of the cultural scene in the city, decentralisation of culture, revitalisation of spaces, preservation of cultural heritage, internationalisation of cultural contents and establishing links with the art scenes of Europe and the world, all under the slogan For New Bridges. All these activities are aimed at fulfilling the project vision: for Beginning of New. Now! coined as a clever pun on the name of Novi (new) Sad (now).
About The Second Europe
The Second Europe is one of the eight program arches initiated as part of the project Novi Sad 2021 – European Capital of Culture, which takes place from 15th October to 15th December 2019.
The Second Europe explores the art scenes and cultures with aesthetic, ethnic, religious, sexual, political, racial, value identities and beliefs that differ from those that are socially dominant. Unlike popular contents, elitist art forms and generally recognised cultural mainstream, The Second Europe focuses on the hidden, challenging, minority culture.
