East-West European Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2008 by the Association East West Jazz Dortmund in collaboration with the Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy from Dortmund and musical institutions from the partner cities of Dortmund: Rostov-on-Don (Russia) and Novi Sad (Serbia). In 2008, an international jury appointed the Orchestra as one of the official orchestras of the Culture Capital - Ruhr 2010. The ensemble stands out for its authentic way of interpretation on an international level. The ensemble includes musical forms yet unknown here, combining European jazz and mainstream jazz with the East European musical traditions of Eastern Jazz (Russian Art and Balkan Folk). The project integrates cultures, lives the European idea and addresses inquisitive, international youth and professional jazz musicians from different regions by its unusual styles of World Jazz. The ensemble consists of musicians from the Ruhr area and partner cities of Dortmund, Rostov and Novi Sad, reinforced by the selected guest soloists and docents. The project director is Uwe Plath (European Jazz Contest 92/93 Brussels Award Winner). Andrey Machnev (the Russian Jazz Concour Award Winner) appears in the role of the orchestra conductor, while Aram Rustamyants (Jazz Award at the Days of Jazz ‘98 in Levercusen) provides arrangements. The musicians chosen in 2008, with different levels of qualification, are either internationally reputed soloists in their European regions (Andrey Machnev/Russ Rostov-on-Don, Uwe Plath/Ger, Ryan Cariaux/USA, Ondrej Stveracek/CZ, Dian Pratiwi/Bali – Indonesia, Adam Klemm/SRB, Andrey Krassilnikov/Russ, Moscow, Aram Rustamyants/Russ, Rostov-on-Don, and others) or particularly talented young men between 17 and 22 years of age (Florian Menzel – German Jazz Award 2007/Yamaha European Jazz Award 2008, Evgeny Ring – Russian Jazz Concour 2007 ’Grand Prix’, and others), who have received national awards and international recognitions for their work. Through the existing networks, the first tour in 2008 of the East-West European Jazz Orchestra featured international soloists such as Dennis Rowland, Peter Weniger, Dian Pratiwi, Gerard Presencer, Peter Beets, among others. The international tour 2009, from 12th to 21st November 2009, will be backed by the ’A Tribute to Count Basie’ by Dennis Rowland as well as the Jerry Beronzi Quartet/USA. In 2010, the Orchestra will appear in the Culture Capital with Dennis Rowland/USA, Milan Svoboda/CZ, the Dresden Symphony and other guest soloists.
