Matilda started exploring music as a child. Coming from a musically gifted family (her grandmother and mother are superb folk music singers, self-taught), Matilda started dancing and singing at an early age, later doing impersonations of different pop and soul singers only to, through blues, discover jazz and the greatest freedom of musical expression. With a desire to gain education in this genre, in 1998 Matilda entered the Jazz Academy in Vienna, where she had spent some of her childhood days with her parents. She graduated in 2002, immediately being offered a lecturing position at the ”Prayner Konservatorium” in Vienna – Jazz Singing. Her talent and musicality soon attracted attention and after a while she gathered a group of musicians from the Viennese jazz scene, such as: Alegre Correa, Reinhard Micko, Ronaldo Sagioratto, Georg Breinschmid, Karl Sayer, Christian Havel, Joschi Schneeberger, etc. She later met Harri Stojka, famous Austrian gypsy guitarist, who promptly engaged her for a three-year tour and CD recording. After several years in the jazz music business, Matilda reached for her roots and started to fuse traditional Balkan music and rhythms with jazz. This is how her notion of the ’world music’ was born. In 2004 she founded Matilda Leko & Band that she had great success with at the first Balkan Fever Festival in Vienna. The band’s authenticity lies in its constellation from the different corners of the world: Ronaldo Sagioratto from Brazil, e-bass; Dušan Novakov, drums; Sabri Tulug Tirpan, piano; and Alexandar Vladigeroff, trumpet. Several years later there were Uwe Urbanowski, Wolfgang Puschnig, Paul Urbanek, Oliver Gattringer, Bertl Mayer, Nikola Stanošević, Milan Nikolić, etc. Staying true to her genre, Matilda’s performances envelop the entire gamut of this great music field, and that is jazz (swing, be bop), blues, gospel, soul, funk, bossa nova and samba, world music, modern jazz, Balkan... her music is recognisable for her versatility and expressivity, which steps over all the boundaries of the conventional understanding of music, finding its own ’sound’. Appearances: Porgy & Bess in Vienna, Joe Zawinul’s Birdland, Gipsy Festival Vienna, Sziged Festival (Hu), Festival Angers (Fr), different festivals in Germany, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Switzerland, etc. Matilda has also participated in the production of some documentary films and different theatrical performances she composed music for.
Projects: Matilda Leko & Band; Duo with guitarist Thiemo Kirberg (A. C. Jobim); Zig Zag World Music. |

Nikola Stanošević was born on 11th December 1980 in Belgrade. He grew up in a musical family and music followed him from the earliest childhood, so it was a small wonder that he started showing his musical interest and talent at an early age. At the age of 7 he started his formal musical education at a Lower Music School (piano). In 1995 he entered High Music School in Kragujevac (instrumentalist-piano), matriculating in 1999 with excellent grades and very good results in different competitions. At that time, besides classical music, he started showing great interest in jazz. In the period between 2000 and 2004, during his studies at the Bruckner Conservatoire in Linz, making a great progress, Nikola started performing with different bands (jazz, pop, rock, classical music), and in various situations (concerts, theatres, musicals). He has performed throughout Austria and Germany, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Ukraine, etc. Nikola is currently at his Master’s studies at the Conservatoire in Vienna (Jazz Department) and is active as a sideman in different formations. He performs at jazz clubs of Vienna and other places in Austria as well as throughout Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Portugal), including appearances at festivals, theatres and clubs. |
