JAZZ EX TEMPORE (Multi-cultural musical project)
Jazz Ex Tempore was initiated in 2005. The project was inspired by a need for an institutional education in the field of Croatian musical heritage, as well as its similarities and differences with other cultural traditions. The project has three stages, the first and third taking place in Croatia and the second abroad. The project is aimed at gathering experts in our own cultural heritage as well as the contemporary music trends from different European and world regions and countries, who would play together during their one-week stay in Opatija, Croatia, creating a fusion of different music traditions, and sharing their experiences with the public through workshops. Jazz Ex Tempore – 2005–2008: Participants of the first four editions of Jazz Ex Tempore were artists from Europe (Italy, Great Britain, Finland, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, France, Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia), Asia (Armenia, Indonesia), Africa (Mali) and Latin America (Cuba, Mexico). Those were: Cheik-Tidiane Seck (keyboards, Mali), Silvano Mustelier Cabrejas (percussions, Cuba), Arnaud Delafosse (drums, France), Vasil Hadžimanov (piano, keyboards, Macedonia) Giovanni Toffoloni (bass, Italy), Elvis Stanić (guitar, Croatia), Eric Zawinul (percussions, Austria), Karin Asatrian (piano, Armenia), Jose Leonardo Angel Rodrigez (drums, Cuba), Vladimir Samardžić (bass, Serbia), Putokazi (vocal group, Croatia), Enzo Favata (saxophone, traditional and classical wind instruments, Italy), Daniele Di Bonaventura (piano, bandoneon, Italy), Yuri Goloubev (double bass, Russian), Ratko Divjak (drums, Slovenia), Silvia Abalos (classical ballet and traditional dance, mime, vocal, Mexico), Johanna Juhola (accordion, Finland), Andrea Vicary (piano, Great Britain), Rico De Jeer (double bass, the Netherlands), Hristo Yotsv (drums, Bulgaria). There were 19 workshops open and free for the public where the artists spoke about their cultural traditions, their own artistic path and creative process, thus sharing their knowledge and experience with young people who make the majority of our audience. In November 2008 the artists gave Master Class about Croatian traditional music and their experiences from London’s Trinity College of Music. Since 2008 the project has been extended both in Croatia and abroad. The final concert which was previously organised only in Opatija, took place in Zagreb as well (The Croatian Jazz Convention, BP Club), and after Croatia, it moved to the countries of the participating artists. So in 2008, the compositions created in Croatia were presented at concerts in Great Britain (three concerts in London, November 2008), Bulgaria (four concerts in Sofia and Plovdiv, October 2009), and the Netherlands (three concerts in Groningen, Utrecht and Leimuiden, March 2009), while the great finale was within the 9th Liburnia Jazz Festival 2009 with the promotion of the CD Round Trip under the Croatia Records label. In 2007 the compositions performed at the final concerts 2005 and 2006 were released on a CD under the Croatia Records label. CD ”Jazz Ex Tempore” has won the following awards: Porin in 2008 in the category Best Jazz Album – for the album ”Jazz Ex Tempore ’05/’06”; Porin in 2008 in the category Best Jazz Composition for the composition Angiolina from the ”Jazz Ex Tempore ’05/’06” album; Porin in 2008 in the category Best Jazz Performance for the performance of the Angiolina from the ”Jazz Ex Tempore ’05/’06” album. The 5th Jazz Ex Tempore edition presented artists in workshops in Vila Antonio in Opatija from 19th to 21st October 2009, and the final concerts were held on 22nd October in BP Club in Zagreb and 23rd October in Vila Angiolini in Opatija. The musicians also took part in the Jazzik Festival in Subotica where they gave a workshop for the students of the Music School in Subotica.
