GISLE TORVIK TRIO
This is a brand new band put together of some of the finest young Nordic jazz musicians. The trio manage to go from whispering expressions to blasting upbeat swing and play everything in between with an organic Nordic sound. This means that the expression of Torvik’s tunes and playing are mostly melancholic and with strong melodic lines. You can hear from the tunes that they are written in Norway and some tunes have a hint of Norwegian folk music influences.
GISLE TORVIK
(born 2nd of June 1975 in Bergen, Norway)
Gisle grew up in the beautiful Hardanger Fjord on the west coast of Norway. He started out playing at different venues with a local band, but at the age of 19 he was hit by the “Jazz-train.”
Amazingly he didn’t pick up the guitar before at the age of 17, but is today considered as one of the most talented Nordic jazz guitarists.
Torvik released his first album in 1999 called Nakenutengitar (which translates to "Naked without guitar"), where among others Sigmund Groven and Petter Wettre contributed.
The album Frozen Moment was released in 2009 featuring Hilde Norbakken (on vocals), to good reviews. This was his first album combining vocals and guitar as lead «voices». In March 2011 his song «I remember» from this album reached the semi-final of ISC International Songwriting Competition.
"Festivalmag" says: There is a Nordic melancholic and frost in the tunes, just like the albums of Jan Garbarek, Mari Boine and Terje Rypdal. This puts Torvik straight into a Nordic jazz tradition that is world known.
Torvik works as a composer, musician, arranger, producer and conductor, as well as a guest instructor.
These days he is making music to his upcoming trio album, where the new tune Tranquil Fjord will be featured. It was made a music video to this tune that passed over 10 000 views only weeks after its release and has ended up as top 3 voted videos on BesJazzVideos.com.
AUDUN ELLINGSEN
(born 4th of January 1979 in Orsta, Norway.)
Jazz became his main musical interest after hearing Kind of Blue at a friend's place at age 16 and he soon realized that he had to play the double bass. This was far more fun than playing electric bass and he started practicing like a maniac.
In 1999 he enrolled at the jazz course at the Leeds College of Music (UK) where he studied with Stuart Riley and Zoltan Dekaney.
During his years in Leeds he became an active bass player, playing in various groups and in local rhythm sections, comping touring British and American soloists like Mark Nightingale, Joe Temperly, Alan Barnes and Red Holloway, to mention a few. One of his main projects, “Sphinx”, was founded in this period and they started recording CDs and touring England and Norway. He has been touring jazz clubs and festivals in Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Greece, France, UK, Belgium, Slovakia, China and Japan with great musicians and bands like Froy Aagre, Arch70, Sphinx, Kenny Wheeler, Tomasz Stanko, Bobo Stenson, Hot Club de Norvege, Petter Wettre, Staffan William-Olsson, Nils Olav Johansen, KORK (Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra), Matt Bourne, Ognjen Popovic, Bojan Nikolic and his own band, Audun Automat, playing his own compositions.
HERMUND NYGAARD
Hermund Nygaard (1979) studied jazz at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway.
With his characteristic and musical drumming he has made a name not only in Norway, but also on the international jazz scene. He has toured with great stars in the world of jazz over the years: Silje Neergaard, Sharp 9, The Real Thing, The Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra, to mention a few. You can listen to Hermund’s intuitive and improvisatory playing on many albums, from pop music to free jazz.
