POLISH JAZZ POSTER EXHIBITION
from the
Warsaw P o l i s h P o s t e
r G a l l e r y Collection |
Poster – a
printed sheet of paper. Many people think: nothing great and
definitely nothing valuable. However, if you look carefully you can
see that the poster is a significant medium of information, a part
of advertising and marketing game, a herald of cultural events or an
instrument of political propaganda. Poland is a country, where
poster design became the art of poster. The process of that
transformation first occurred in the fifties of 20th century, and
for its uniqueness it was called Polish School of Poster Design. Its
stylistic is based on analysis and creative transformation of theme
into a surprising illustrative figure. The posters designed by
artists express their individual approach turned into independent
creative act. Exhibition of Polish Jazz Posters accompanying the
International Jazz Festival in Novi Sad is an attempt to show a
small part of the heritage of Polish designers. We are presenting
posters from years 1949 - 2001 announcing jazz festivals, concerts
and musicians. Polish artists: Rafal Olbinski, Jan Sawka, Waldemar
Swierzy (and others too numerous to mention) are very well known
worldwide for their outstanding skills. We hope that the public of
Novi Sad will share our fascinations with these works of art. We
would like to express our thanks to the people from Cultural Center
of Novi Sad, especially the director of the center Ms. Mirjana
Markovinovic and the editor of the Festival Ms. Vesna Kacanski for
the idea of exhibition, invitation and support. Warsaw,

Galeria Polskiego Plakatu (Polish
Poster Gallery) was established in Warsaw in 1975. At the beginning
it was a state owned enterprise most famous in poster collectors
circle for its annual Poster Fair. In 1987 when the political and
economical situation in Poland began to change, the gallery was
privatized and has been owned and run since then by a group of
keen poster collectors. The Gallery is located on the Old Town
Market Square in Warsaw in the very heart of the city at the
crossroads of all tourist routes. We are in possession of more than
1000 titles of Polish posters on permanent sale and around 7500 in
collection. They are designed by the most famous Polish graphic
artists e.g.: J.J.Aleksiun, R.Cieslewicz, J.Czerniawski, Stasys
Eidrigevicius, E.Get-Stankiewicz, W.Górka, M.Górowski, R.Kalarus,
A.Klimowski, J.Lenica, G.Marszalek, J.Mlodozeniec, R.Olbinski,
A.Pagowski, W.Rosocha, W.Sadowski, J.Sawka, F.Starowieyski,
R.Szaybo, W.Swierzy, H.Tomaszewski, M.Urbaniec, W.Walkuski. Apart
from selling the stock the Gallery handles a large collection of
posters which consists of 7500 titles designed by the best Polish
post-war artists. This set of works, assembled through the years, is
a basis for numerous exhibitions of posters organized by the Gallery
in Poland and abroad. Collection includes theatre, movie, music or
generally “cultural” posters. Since 1990 we’ve organized exhibitions
of Polish posters in Århus (Denmark), a display of Stasys works in
Nowy Theatre in Warsaw, exhibitions in Copenhagen (Denmark),
Budapest (Hungary), Victoriaville (Canada) and an extensive
exhibition of Polish propaganda posters at the International
Advertising Fair “Crackfilm” in Krakow. Another field of
Gallery’s activity is poster publishing. On behalf of theatres and
other corporate poster producers we arrange the whole process of
poster publishing – starting from choosing an artist and supervising
the formation of design, right down to printing and distribution.
Acting this way we’ve contributed to creation of almost 200 posters,
among them such splendid works of art as: “Caligula” and “Festival
of Polish Puppet Theatres” by Walkuski, “Festival of Spanish
Culture” by Górowski, “Ball in Savoy” and “Satyrykon '95” by
Czerniawski or “Wesele” by Mlodozeniec to mention only a few. In
recent years the worldwide accessibility of Internet enabled
the Gallery to present Polish poster art to a much wider audience.
The Gallery’s website http://www.poster.com.pl shows hundreds of
posters from the collection, allows poster collectors from around
the world to exchange ideas and informations and to stay in touch
with the latest news.
