Bojan
Zulfikarpasic was born in 1968 in Belgrade. He studied piano at
University of Michigan, in class of Professor Claire Fiscer, and in
1988 he left for France, where he joined the avangarde of French
jazz. In 1990 he wined the first prize at the “Défense” competition.
He records albums Bojan Z
Quartet in 1993, Yopla in 1995 and
The Roots in
1999. On the scene he plays alone or with his band. At the same time
he performs as a sideman with Henry Texier, Nguyen Lê, Michel
Portal, Julien Lourau, Karim Ziad and Malik
Mezzadri. Deeply in jazz, and at the same moment
open for every other kind of music, Bojan Z continuously refreshes
his themes, as well as the themes of his favourite musician such as
Texier, Colemann, Rolins, Stravinski, and traditional Macedonian
music… Balance between the improvised sound and the original is
expressed by the balance of melody and rhythm that is momentarily
ironic, than romantic and at the same time stabile, never breaking
the unity of the composition that Bojan virtuously performs from the
beginning to the end. This name –
that of an outstanding pianist – is like a ray of sun shining out
over the Mediterranean Sea, the sea of his childhood in
Ex-Yugoslavia, cradle of a certain culture and music that have never
left him since. But it is
trough various encounters that this thirty-three year old artist has
forged, and continues to forge, his extremely personal style and
character, which can be heard in his concerts or on his first three
albums as led pianist of the Label Blue. Three different but
complementary, original, and surprising works, which constitute the
raw material of his latest opus, Solobsession. It is an
hour-long piece where Bojan, as the name suggests, is face to face
with his piano, the instrument that he knows by heart and that his
fingers have been running up and down since he was five years old in
Belgrade. |
