Is one of the
oldest institutions of this kind in the world, existing continuously
since 1945. A tribute of its formation goes mainly to maestro Bojan
Adamic, that conducted the orchestra until the beginning of 1960-es,
when young Joze Privsek, that previously showed great skills on
piano and vibraphone, takes over. But the major qualities of his
refer to the filed of composition, arrangement and conducting the
orchestra. Radio Ljubljana Dance Orchestra, as our big band was
called, belonged to the class of the best orchestras. Its domination
on the Ex Yugoslav territory was undoubtedly, and Radio Ljubljana
Dance Orchestra was also appreciated abroad. At the competition in
Germany, among orchestras such as James Last and Max Greger
orchestra, it was awarded for the best record. After Privsek
leadership goes to Lojze Krajncan, than to Peter Ugrin, Milko Lazar,
Emil Spruk and others. We hosted the most respectable conductors and
soloists from abroad, that all have been delighted to work with our
jazzers (Mercer Ellington, Maria Schneider, Carla Bley, Herb
Pomeroy, Mathias Rüegg, Clark Terry, Stjepko Gut, Johnny Griffin,
David Murray end many others).
Today RT
Slovenia Big band is mostly composed of young people, that are, in
average, something over thirty. Most of them have been educated at
the jazz academies abroad and all of them are virtuous on their
instruments. Therefore the quality of the band is on an admirable
level, and many of the world houses would be delighted to have such
a band. The quality of our big band is also upgraded with the
variousity of programme that satisfies totally different genre
needs, such as film, dance, pop and classical music, of radio and
television shows. But the most interest and love our orchestra still
shows towards jazz.
Jazz
incorporates very wide range of styles and RT Slovenia Big Band has
proved itself in many of them. Among the titles of its records we
can find “Swing, Swing, Swing” (Joze Privsek), “Tribute
To Count Basie” (Joze Privsek),
“Glenn Miller Story” (Joze Privsek), “My
Wish” (Primoz Grasic), “Concert for piano and jazz orchestra” (Milko Lazar), “Hunski
hrbti” (Milko Lazar). The last CD project
under conducting of Lojze Krajncan was issued in autumn of 2002,
with Bosko Petrovic as a soloist, and is called “Round Midnight”.
