Jazz music and film lover, film and jazz, whichever should come first, Ilija-Ika Malin, besides being an owner of a collection of old, quite various, film projectors, and besides still being a successful film operator, is one of our townsmen who has been part of the Novi Sad Jazz Festival’s team since the very beginning, part of the Novi Sad Jazz Festival. From time to time, not every but almost every year, he prepares projection of documentary films from the Newport Jazz Festival (16 mm tape), completely demystifying a film operator’s profession, revealing some of its charm to the younger generation of audiences who have not had a chance to see 16mm tape and hear that sound which is very hard to describe, but when we hear it, we all know that it is the film tape running through the projector, with its loud buzz, and the buzz becomes louder, joined with yet another sound telling us that the tape is ragged.
In the next moment, when we are already sitting in front of the screen and the projection has already started, we are met by musicians from some other time, good music, or better to say information and the voice of the well-known MC. This is followed by a round of applause, music, good mood. Welcome!
