The Classy
Four saxophone quartet was founded in fall 1996. The band, of which
all four members are women, is playing one of the most popular
instrument of our age, the saxophone in a classical grouping –
soprano, alt, tenor and baritone, allowing full musical
representation and also an opportunity to solo performances for each
instrument. |

The
repertoire consists of old classics and contemporary compositions as
well. The band is proud to have been the first to play Figyes Hidas
saxophone quartet in Hungary. But the so-called classical repertoire
including world-famous arrangements of blues, ragtime pieces, motion
picture tunes and well-known songs, is the main focus of the band.
The band plays these pieces in clubs, parties, organized events and
smaller concerts. But there have been many occasions, mainly in jazz
festivals, when to make the sound and the show even more colorful, a
percussion trio joined the band. The arrangements played on these
occasions were written especially for Classy
Four. |

There also were many opportunities for
the band to play in the media. The most notable of these is the
“Classical and Jazz” show of the Hungarian Radio. In these
performances next to easy listening pieces, the band also played the
clarinet, the bassoon and the
flute.
Classy
Four has played in nearly all TV channels, has been the topic of
many articles in newspapers and the members also published writings
in specialized magazines.
But
ultimately the most important acknowledgement of the qualities of
the band is the fact that the best jazz musicians of the Hungarian
musical scene cherish the band and support its existence and its
future by making joint concerts at jazz festivals and saxophone
shows – which is a wonderful opportunity for Classy Four to prove
its accomplishment. |
