THE BUDAPEST JAZZ ORCHESTRA
(BJO) was founded in 1998. It is an ensemble of the first-class
musicians playing under professional management. The BJO has been
very active in the domestic jazz scene (Kecskemét Jazz Feszztival,
Szombathelyu Jazz Napok, Hódmezovásárhhelyi
Zenei Napok) and in jazz clubs. The Hungarian National Radio had
a live broadcast of their concert celebrating 100 years of the birth
of Duke Ellington. At the International Buda Stage in 1999 they
had a session consisting of three parts where they played pieces
from Ellington to nowadays.
In music house Matáv (Zenehár). Among their numerous
performances, the concert with the Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra
and the National Choir stands out. This concert was given in 2000
and is famous because the Philharmonic put D. Ellington's piece
"Sacred Concert" on their repertoire. This unforgettable
concert was directed by Danish director John Hoyb, and Elinor Johanson,
a Swedish soprano, appeared there as well. They played the same
piece in 2003 at the Spring Festival in Budapest with famous saxophone
player Dave Libman. The BJO accomplished successful cooperation
with the excellent D.G.Lumuto, the trombone player from Italy when
he was a guest of the Cultural Institute Franko Donatoni Sweet Basil
in Italy.
In collaboration with widely renowned Hungarian director Eötvös
Peter, they played the piece Paris-Dakar and recorded a CD. The
BJO was a great success in 2002 at the Dobos Fargsang Festival.
In July 2003 BJO gave a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
